If you crave a home that appears a bit more elevated, keep in mind that there are many ways that you can restyle items that you already own to make your house look and feel brand new.

Below, four designers weigh in with eight useful styling tips that don’t involve making any purchases but instead encourage you to cleverly rearrange the items you do have.

Rethink Your Art Display

If your home is filled with artwork of all kinds, you may wish to do a bit of rejiggering now and then. Francesca Herro Saour, the founder of Francesca Herro Interiors, says that swapping out artwork is one of the most underestimated ways to mix up your space.

Have a large, blank wall that’s bothering you? Group together some items that you already have on hand throughout the house to fill the space.

“Combining a mirror with plates around it can read just as beautifully as a commissioned large-scale piece,” she says.

Move Your Accent Chairs Around

Herro also enjoys moving accent chairs around the home in order to better fill a given room.

Whether it’s a single or pair of chairs, she suggests placing one on either side of a console or cabinet since they can look great in a variety of settings. If you have a window nook that could use some love, take an accent chair and place it near that empty spot.

“The great thing about introducing unexpected chairs is that…whether they are printed or solid, the color scheme doesn’t have to match precisely,” Herro says.

Play Up Natural Bedroom Lighting

If you’re wondering just how to make the most of a light-filled sleep space, you’ll want to start by grabbing that white comforter out of the linen closet, suggests Laura Jenkins, the founder of Laura W. Jenkins Interiors. The natural light will reflect on the colored comforter and make your room appear brighter.

That said, you can also take the opposite approach if you wish to lean into a space’s moodiness, the designer adds.

Add Height With Artwork

You may think that you need to shy away from oversized art pieces in rooms that lack an impressive ceiling height. However, Jenkins is a proponent of going large in scale with one individual piece rather than simply hanging a standard gallery wall.

“The size tension of the larger work can often give the impression that the room is larger than it really is,” she explains.

Style a Bookshelf

Don’t let your favorite items simply sit in random spots of the home collecting dust. Take a stroll throughout your house and corral photos, books, and trinkets that speak to you and deserve a bit more attention. Then, style everything together on a bookshelf in one of your main living spaces, offers Genevieve Webb, a principal designer at Feather Hill Interiors.

“It’s an impactful way to declutter your living spaces and craft a narrative that resonates with your personal style,” Webb says.

Keep Accessories Fresh

Keep in mind that some accessories may be too large to be styled on a shelf and are meant to be moved around as you desire.

“If home storage allows, try to keep a selection of decor items and switch them out periodically to keep things interesting,” Yoselin Castro, senior interior designer at Mackenzie Collier Interiors, says.

Shuffle Your Rugs

While area rugs are large in size, by no means are they permanent fixtures of a given room, and you should feel free to rotate them around if you wish.

“Rugs can drastically alter the mood and style of a space,” Castro says. “Some will make the space cozy and moody, while others will brighten it up and introduce all the energy and color!”

Make Seasonal Updates

Many designers agree that making decorative changes to mark the beginning of a new season is a final way to elevate your space on a semi-frequent basis and note that switching out pillow covers is one simple yet impactful tactic.

“Transition from the warm, rich textures of winter to the crisp, light linens of summer to maintain a home that feels vibrant and cohesive year-round,” Webb says.
