The change of seasons is always an excellent time to switch up your home decor, but according to designers, not all fall decorating choices are wise ones. The pros we spoke with were quick to share six common fall decorating mistakes that are thought to make a space fall flat. Avoid these pitfalls to ensure that your home shines this autumn, both indoors and out.
Forgetting to Incorporate Textural Pieces
Fall is all about embracing warm, comforting textures in your wardrobe, and this extends to your home, too. Your seasonal decor scheme just isn’t going to be complete without these touches,Shalmai Keim, the founder of Shalmei Interiors & Designs, explains. She urges people to avoid solely decking out their homes with paper and plastic items and instead opt for accessories that have a little more to offer material-wise.
“Incorporating textures like chunky knits, woven baskets, or other natural textures can create a more inviting space,” she says.

Purchasing New Decor Every Season
Rather than heading to the store and purchasing brand new fall decor every year, think about investing in pieces that you will be excited to display season after season.
“I’ve found that my most beloved decor pieces are the ones I unearth from storage every year,” Elissa Hall, the founder of EDH Interiors, says. “The ritual of pulling out a favorite blanket, or decorating for Halloween with items imbued with fond memories as the weather turns can be so satisfying.”
Selecting pieces that you plan to hold onto for the long haul is also much more budget-friendly and sustainable than re-buying everything you need year after year. Rather than giving into the latest trends, set your sights on items that will stand the test of time and become seasonal staples within your household.

Not Bringing the Outdoors In
It may seem like a no-brainer to some but, oftentimes, people forget to draw decor inspiration from the natural scenes unfolding right outside, Hall shares. She notes that there is no need to spend money on seasonal objects that can be collected for free.
“Pine cones, pumpkins, and fall leaf motifs can be found on all sorts of decor, but these items are also right at your doorstep,” she says. “It can be a fun seasonal activity to create a fall wreath or gather pine cones on a walk to arrange in a bowl.”
Kids and adults alike will enjoy scavenging for pretty leaves, acorns, and more in order to assemble their very own fall decor displays.
Displaying Pumpkins Too Early
Maybe you’re someone who starts acting as though it’s fall once the calendar hits mid-August. However, that doesn’t mean you should go ahead and display those jack-o-lanterns the moment your pumpkin-flavored products hit shelves. There is such a thing as displaying your pumpkins on the stoop too prematurely in the season—particularly if they’re already carved.
Colleen Waguespack, the founder of Colleen Waguespack Interiors, warns against jumping in too early or you may have a rotten pumpkin falling apart on your porch by Halloween. Consider sticking to seasonal florals such as mums until Halloween is a mere couple of weeks away, or else you’ll just have to rebuy everything before the holiday is even close to arriving.

Displaying Foliage That Looks Too Fake
Not all leaf-themed decor is going to elevate your space.
Taylor Bowling, the founder of Home Taylored, explains how many people often make the mistake of using obvious faux foliage. While she is open to the concept of decorating with fake leaves, she offers a few tips.
“Pay attention to the coloring of it and make sure it’s not too bright orange or yellow,” the designer says. “It should look like it came from nature and not from a dye lot.”
Not Considering Your Everyday Home Decor Scheme
As you decorate the inside of your home for fall, you will want to ensure that your seasonal additions still complement your overall design scheme and stand out within your space to really make an impact.
“As a designer, we often help our clients integrate bold colors and popping prints into their homes, which pair beautifully with more neutral accents,” Paige Williams, the founder of Paige W Interior Design, says.
She adds that if you generally decorate with neutrals, consider fall decor that is a bit bolder in color and will really pop. Note that you do not need to stick solely to traditional “fall” colors like orange, brown, and red to celebrate the season, Keim adds. This could make the room feel overwhelming and dated, Keim says. Instead, consider hues like grays, greens, and yellows that can also be beautiful for fall.
