Whether you travel often, are convinced that you don’t have a green thumb, or simply do not want to worry about maintaining live plants day after day, you may wish to incorporate some faux green friends into your home. Today, there are so many incredible, realistic-looking fake plants on the market, making it easy to enjoy a natural feel in your space without having to worry about a watering schedule.

There are many ways that you can elevate your fake plants so that they appear real and extra stylish. Below, three interior designers chime in with their top tips for integrating fake plants into the home.

Move Faux Plants Into Real Vessels

Part of the fun of decorating with plants is choosing a vessel that captures your attention. However, many fake plants come situated inside simple plastic vessels with faux dirt on top, which isn’t the most convincing setup nor an aesthetically pleasing one. In order to make your fake plants appear as real as possible, you can try a couple of simple hacks.

Alexis Warren, the founder of Alexis Warren Designs, recommends placing your fake plant into a real vessel and using items like moss to make it look real.

Ania Agárdy, a designer, adds that placing stones or soil on top of fake plants will also make a major difference. Need to make your plant appear a bit taller in the pot? There’s a hack for that, too, according to designer Liad Schwartz.

“After placing your tree in the pot, fill the base with plastic bags or shredded paper to achieve the desired height,” he says.

When choosing a pot, consider going the vintage route for extra personality, Schwartz says. Take to your local thrift store or flea market in search of a pot that speaks to you and isn’t one that you will come across in all of your friends’ and neighbors’ homes. Considering that brand new plant pots can be pricey, this is an excellent way to save some money, too.

Don’t Be Afraid to Mix in Some Real Plants

By no means do you have to commit to solely real or fake plants in your home. Agárdy is a proponent of saying yes to both.

“Mixing them helps blur the line between what’s real and what’s not,” she says.

Another one of her tips is to place fake plants in spots where real plants would thrive, such as on the windowsill or in well-lit rooms.

Stick With Smaller Plants

Warren has found over time that larger plants tend to appear less realistic than smaller fake ones, so she has become more discerning about the types that she buys. She personally loves sticking to orchids, moss, or smaller green leafy plants when she’s looking around.

Look for Imperfect Elements

Additionally, be mindful to look for fake plants that don’t appear too perfect.

“The more imperfect and organic in their shape, the more authentic in their appearance,” Agárdy says. “Anything in a glossy finish or a bright green color tone is a no-go.”

Rather, as Schwartz comments, trees with multiple shades of green in them are going to be more convincing.

“This variation in color mimics the natural look of real plants, making them appear more authentic,” he says.

Don’t Skimp on Price

While some fake plants are certainly on the more expensive end, Warren considers them to be a worthwhile investment due to their longevity. After all, they live forever with zero upkeep, she says.

And don’t worry that you won’t ever have a place in your home for your fake plant. Warren explains that plants—both real and fake—can shine in so many different spaces. Warren loves styling plants in bathrooms by the sink, in the center of coffee tables, or stacked on tops of books.
