Floral prints are everywhere this summer, much to interior designers’ delight.

“We never shy away from a good floral pattern,” Ashley Ferguson, the founder of Ashley Ferguson Interiors, says. “Florals can make a space feel vibrant and warm.”

If you’re eager to incorporate a variety of patterns into your home without them looking chaotic, you’ll want to keep reading. We asked designers to share their top tips for mixing and matching floral prints so that they look elegant, not tacky. Below, pros weigh in with their go-to solutions.

Play Favorites

Choose one floral print that you like the most and designate that as the dominant fabric that will help you then determine your color scheme, Bambi A’Lynn Bratton, the founder of Bambi A’Lynn Interior Design, says.

“It doesn’t have to be the largest scale or the most dense floral—just one that you love most—then build from there,” the designer says. “Once you have a preferred base, it’s easier to mix and match for a layered look.”

Amy Pigliacampo, the founder of Amy Pigliacampo Interiors agrees and recommends leaning into what you personally love in terms of color and pattern.

Speaking of color scheme, it’s wise to stick with a general palette for maximal sophistication. Bratton suggests using a cohesive color between floral patterns to help unify the overall look and feel of the space. “Try a bold hue or even a nice neutral to connect the dots between patterns,” Bratton says.

You can also look to your overall home when selecting shades.

“It’s really all about scale, instinct, and a few elements that tie it all together, whether that’s a particular floral motif, specific colors or textures, or referencing other elements in the home so that the space doesn’t feel completely random,” Pigliacampo says.

Be Mindful of Scale

Worried about your space appearing too busy with multiple floral patterns? This is easy to avoid with a thoughtful approach. Stay away from duplicate patterns of the same size and make sure the white space and density don’t compete with the floral patterns, Bratton says.

Mixing together too many smaller patterns is a major don’t, Pigliacampo notes.

Weave in Other Prints and Solids

Instead of going all in with florals and calling it a day, make a point to bring other patterns and textures into your space. Bratton suggests mixing things up by also decorating with stripes, plaids, birds, or animals.

“You can also weave in floral patterns in different textures, such as linen, chintz, brocade, or embroidery,” she says.

Sarah Latham, the founder of Latham Interiors, agrees and recommends balancing the space with solids and geometric patterns instead of using florals on every surface.

Have Fun With Trim

Get creative when mixing and matching floral prints, and don’t forget about your trim.

Grey Joyner, the founder of Grey Joyner Interiors, loves using a subtle floral patterned trim when it comes to pairing it with a bold floral pattern for a chair or pillow since it will allow each pattern to stand out in its own unique way.

Think Beyond the Obvious

Remember that you don’t have to just stick with pillow covers and curtains when using florals.

“A large floral rug in the living room can be balanced with smaller floral prints on throw pillows and a delicate floral pattern on a lampshade,” Allison Kaminsky, lead designer of Lola Tucker Interiors, says.

Be Confident About Your Choices

If you’re going to embrace florals, really go all in.

“It’s actually the boldness that makes mixing patterns work well,” Pigliacampo says. “If you are too
cautious and hold back, it’s often noticeable in the end result.”

At the end of the day, successfully mixing floral patterns is all about choosing what you love and feeling good about this arrangement.

“Pattern mixing has some rules but it’s largely intuitive and it’s fun,” Pigliacampo explains. “I think that one needs to be very comfortable with their choices and follow their instincts.”

Pigliacampo encourages individuals to believe in their initial vision and to trust their combination works since their confidence will make others believe in it as well.
